We were honored to have Mr. Michael Miller from the Boy scouts of America, Greater Alabama Council join us to honor the commitment of several members to the scouting movement. Herb Winches -Sports Director CBS-42
Herb Winches is a native of Louisville, Kentucky where he attended DeSales High School. After graduation Herb earned a football scholarship to Jacksonville State University where he played running back. His senior year Herb help lead Jacksonville State to its only undefeated team in school history at 11-0. Following his senior season he was named the team’s most valuable player. After graduation Herb went to work at WHNT-TV in Huntsville, Alabama and remained there for 15 months before coming to Birmingham as the Sports Director at WBRC-TV in 1976. Herb spent 14 years in local television and was named Associated Press Sportscaster of the Year 5 times during his tenure in television. Winches also pioneered High School football coverage in Alabama. Winches also spent 15 years in radio and founded WJOX all-sports radio in 1992.
Winches has spent some 30 years in the Birmingham television and radio market and now serves as the sports anchor on CBS 42 News at 10pm.
Winches is married to Dr. Betty Winches and they have two children and make their home in Hoover, Alabama
Herb is the Sports Director for CBS 42.
