Pancake Day- Silent Auction Request Letter

January 31, 2008

We would love everyone’s help in securing quality Silent Auction items- golf packages, restaurant gift certificates, cookbooks, salon services, etc. I will be updating this blog with an Excel Spreadsheet of secured items and those that are being sought by specific individuals. Hopefully this will avoid any duplication of requests. Below is the link to the downloadable and printable Word Document.

Fishing or Catching?

January 13, 2008

The following is from Kiwanis CEO Rob Parker’s Leadership Blog…

I heard a speaker recently share a story about a deep-sea fishing experience he had with his young son.  He said that from his perspective it was a wonderful day.  The weather was perfect, the sea was calm and beautiful, the boat was fun, and he got to spend a full day with his son.  Although they had not caught any fish, it really was a wonderful time.  At the end of the day he asked his son if he enjoyed himself and he was surprised at the response.  His son was sad and dejected and said he thought it was terrible because they did not catch any fish. The father thought about this for a moment and then offered this insightful counsel:  “If every time you went fishing you were assured of catching something, it would not be called fishing, it would be called catching.”

Let’s all share the excitement that comes with being Kiwanians!

Foundation Closer to Goal of $100,000

January 10, 2008

Glenn Davis, Chair of the KCOHMB Foundation Board, provided us with an update on our push toward $100K drive. To date 21 members have contributed to this cause in the amount of about $4,500. This puts our Foundation Account at $95,580- very close to our $100,000 goal. If you have not contributed to this drive, please do so today.

Upon reaching this goal, we will potentially have an additional $6,000 annually to be invested in local children’s charities and/or go toward a special child-centered project that we have not yet begun.

Please help us reach $100,000!

1/9/2008 Meeting Recap

January 10, 2008

Happy 2008! We started out the new year meeting in our new “temporary” location in the Gold Room of The Club, Inc. This will be our home while The Club renovates the Staterooms, which includes a complete transformation to be completed in July 2008. We look forward to the new space and appreciate everyone’s accommodation during this transition.

We had an excellent speaker this week. Scott Wepfer, owner of The Compounding Shoppe in Homewood shared about his unique business that customizes treatment to the needs of the patients. I encourage you to visit his website at http://www.rxproblemsolvers.com/  Especially interesting was their unique approach to pain management.

Dick Berliner also distributed Pancake Day (March 1st) tickets to those in attendance- others will be distributed via mail.  remember that this is our club’s primary fundraiser and the means by which we fund next year’s Charity Budget. members will see a charge of $100 on their next statement. Please make out a separate check payable to the Kiwanis Club of Homewood Mountain Brook Foundation (as this is a 501(c)3 organization.) This is a minimum donation and members are encouraged to support this effort to the fullest extent possible to magnify the impact of the event.
